How did you come up with the name Ashirtload?
The Ashirtload name reflects our trademark line of “Shirt Shirts” and the wide variety of choices available to our customers. All our designs are available on over 40 different colored shirts.
Where are you from/live now?
My partner, Matt, and I are originally from the Philadelphia area, and currently live in Santa Monica.
When did Ashirtload launch?
Our official launch will be next month, November 2012!
What was the inspiration for launching a t-shirt business?
[What we feel are] clever ideas were being wasted on the small audience of our friends. There’s only so many times you can say “That’s a t-shirt” before you actually start making t-shirts.
What differentiates Ashirtload from all the others on the Internet?
Aside from our Shirt Shirts? Our integrity. We provide high-quality designs on name-brand American Apparel t-shirts, combined with superior customer service, for the same price – or less – than our competitors.
How important is the Made Green in the USA to you? Must be pretty important since you have a big banner stating such on your home page.
Considering the effects of a business on the environment and promoting economic growth domestically is VERY important. We’re just doing our part.
Is using the word shirt in place of shit a shout out to the less profane among us? Or is it more celebrating the play on words?
Both. If you’d like to offend people, there are many t-shirt companies online willing to help. Ashirtload is more interested in finding the line (and walking the line) than crossing it.
The response we’ve received so far has been great. The name of our company alone is usually enough to get a little laugh.
Your website looks like it was built in the 70s. Is that intentional? I mean like the gradient sun in the logo, the heavy green, and the funky way you have the designs straight on the page (until they’re clicked…then you see them on a shirt mock up).
The setting sun and palm fronds are a big part of the Santa Monica scenery, and we wanted the local landscape to be apparent on our website. We’ve kept it simple, clean, bright, and fun.

How important is social media to your business?
Social media has become important to every business, but even moreso for e-tailers. Our website features Facebook, Twitter, and Google + functionality.
What type of person is a prime candidate to be a customer?
A sense of humor has no age or gender or socioeconomic status. For example, I know an old man that loves the “I don’t give a shirt” shirt.
What kind of shirt stock do you use? Why?
We use American Apparel 100% fine, tight-knit cotton. These shirts cost more and reduce our profit margin – but no matter how funny the design, people won’t wear the shirt if it’s not comfortable.
Where do you see your business in a year?
We’re engaging local vendors (i.e. the Venice boardwalk) as well as national retailers (i.e. Macys), so we hope within the next year or so our customers won’t need to go further than their local mall to find Ashirtload apparel. Of course our shirts will continue to be available thru www.ashirtload.com.
What’s your favorite design currently?
Personally, I still laugh a little every time I see the “Fiends don’t let fiends stop drinking” design.
What sells more men or women’s shirts?
Well, we don’t ask gender at the time of purchase, and our shirts are suitable for men or women. However, we are working on a line of shirts dedicated exclusively to women.
Is the world going to end this year?
