OMUNKY: Shirt Shop Interview

by on November 1, 2012

What’s the name of your shop? Your name? Your role?

OMUNKY – A Creative Wildlife Clothing Company. I’m Rick and I own and operate. I do everything from designing the shirts to order fulfillment.

Where are you from/live now?

I am from CA but currently reside in Westchester, NY

When did OMUNKY launch?

In the summer of 2009. I started with 2 designs and had no idea what I was doing, hehe.

What was the inspiration for launching a t-shirt business?

I wanted to do something that allowed me to make fun designs that I could use to cheer up the folks around me. I’ve always enjoyed t-shirts, so the two seemed to fit.

What differentiates OMUNKY from all the others on the Internet?

I guess it would have to be demographics. my designs target both a younger and older audience than my peers. I think I’m less focused on creating designs that are IN and more focused on creating designs that will LAST.

Wildlife seems to be the theme. How did that come about?

I’ve always been a huge fan of animals. When I was a kid I loved going to zoos and watching nature documentaries (and I still do). I thought it would be great to focus my brand around that love. I was also never a huge fan of other animal designs I saw on clothing. So I thought I’d try it my way.

You offer many of your designs printed on organic cotton? How important is the green, eco-friendly movement to you?

When I started this brand I wanted to be a green company first and foremost. That was going to be my schtick. Eco friendly animal tees that didn’t preach. Unfortunately, organic cotton is just too expensive these days. I also found that people were more interested in my designs than on whether or not they were organic. So I have since decided to focus more on the wildlife aspect of the brand.

I still maintain a green workplace and do my best not to waste anything.

How’s business?

Business has taken a nice little leap this year. I think this brand has finally figured out what it wants to be, and its working! I am very excited to see what next year brings.

Tell me about these shows that you attend? What are the benefits of an internet-based company getting outside and meeting people in person?

Doing shows allows me to meet my potential customers/fans in person. Being able to receive compliments and critiques in person has allowed me to grow as a person and as a brand. I think without the shows, OMUNKY would be a very different brand. It was tough, at first, finding show locations that made it worth the time. But now I just can’t get enough of it!

How important is social media to your business?

As an online business, it is very important. It allows me to communicate with my fans regarding sales, new shirts, and behind the scenes goodies. It has allowed me to put a face to this brand and connect with my customers in so many ways. It is also an amazing advertising tool. I have received so much attention thanks to social media.

What’s the weirdest picture of someone wearing one of your tees that you have seen? And/or have you run into a stranger out in the wild wearing one of your products? And/or celebrity sightings?

I was shown one photo of a fan wearing one of my logo tees sitting next to a monkey statue. I thought that was pretty cool. I, along with friends and acquaintances, have spotted OMUNKY in the wild. Just the other day, my cousin said she saw someone wearing one of my shirts at her university.

What type of person is a prime candidate to be a customer?

Well. for starters, you have to be an animal lover. You also have to have a great sense of humor. It wouldn’t hurt if you happen to like one of the particular animals that are featured on my tees.

Where do you get your designs?

There’s a dollar store down the street that sells them to me for 50 cents a pop.

Kidding! A lot of my designs come to me at such random times. I try my best to jot them down, and then I go from there. It can be anything from an inside joke to some random incident that happened to me. I think the most important thing to note is that a lot of times they are just completely random and hilarious.

What kind of shirt stock do you use? Why?

I’m a big fan of American Apparel. Sure, they are a pricier tee than many others. But, in my opinion, you pay for what you get. They are the best shirts I have used so far.

Where do you see your business in a year?

Hopefully doing things bigger and better than this year. I plan on coming out with more lines, doing more shows, and just pushing things a bit farther. It should be an exciting year for OMUNKY.

What’s your favorite tee design currently?

I can’t tell you what it is because it hasn’t been released yet. But I’m loving one of the tees in my winter line.

What sells more men or women’s shirts?

Mens definitely.

Is there a specific subject matter that you sell most of?

Not really. People prefer certain animals over others and that’s what sells better.

What are the top three selling designs at your store?

Spots & Shades, Baboon ‘N Butterflies, and Nocturnal Naptime. Some of my newer shirts are catching up to them, though.

Is the world going to end this year?

I hope not!

Anything else you want to add?

Thanks for taking the time to interview me, and keep on reviewing tees!
